Turmeric Supplement Dosage Guide: How Much Curcumin Do You Actually Need?

"How much turmeric should I take?" is one of the most common questions people have before starting a supplement — and it's genuinely confusing, because different brands use wildly different dosing structures. Here's how to make sense of it.

Why turmeric dosage is confusing to compare

Some brands dose once daily, others require 3–6 capsules a day. Some list turmeric in milligrams, others list curcumin, others list curcuminoids, and many list none of the above. Because there's no single standardised way brands present this information, comparing "dosage" across products means comparing very different things unless you look closely at what's actually being measured.

The three numbers that matter

  1. Turmeric (mg) — the raw weight of turmeric extract used. On its own, this tells you the least, since raw turmeric is only 2–5% curcumin by weight.
  2. Curcuminoids (mg) — the standardised percentage of active compounds (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin) guaranteed in the extract.
  3. Curcumin (mg) — the single most prominent curcuminoid, and the most commonly cited active dose in research.

When comparing two products, the curcumin or curcuminoid figure is far more informative than the turmeric figure.

What doses have been studied

Curcumin research has used a wide range of doses, generally between 500mg and 2,000mg per day, depending on the study and what it was investigating. This is general research context, not a recommendation — the appropriate dose for any individual depends on the specific product's formulation (including whether it includes an absorption enhancer like piperine), personal health circumstances, and other medications. Always follow the directions on the product label, and consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice, particularly if you have an existing health condition or take other medications.

Why absorption enhancement changes the dosage equation

Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. A product that pairs curcumin with piperine (black pepper extract) may support meaningfully better absorption than an equivalent milligram dose taken without it — which means comparing two products purely on curcumin milligrams, without accounting for whether either includes an absorption enhancer, doesn't tell the full story.

How to compare dosage between brands properly

  1. Convert everything to a daily dose (multiply per-capsule figures by capsules-per-day) rather than comparing per-capsule numbers, since daily intake varies from 1 to 6 capsules across different brands.
  2. Prioritise the curcuminoid or curcumin figure, not the turmeric figure.
  3. Check whether an absorption enhancer is included.
  4. Factor in how many capsules per day you'll realistically remember to take — a higher theoretical dose split across 5–6 daily capsules is only useful if you actually take all of them, every day.
